DESCRIPTION:All are invited to the CEDAR/MRC Epidemiology Seminar: \nEating Better For Less: A Nationwide Rebate Program for Healthy Foods\nRoland Sturm\, PhD\, Senior Economist and Professor of Policy Analysis\, RAND\, Santa Monica\, California \nThursday 17 July 2014\, 4.15-5.15pm\nMeeting rooms 1\, 2 & 3\, Level 4 Institute of Metabolic Sciences. \nAbout Roland Sturm\nRoland Sturm (Ph.D.\, Economics\, Stanford University\, 1991) is a Senior Economist at RAND and Professor of Policy Analysis at the Pardee Graduate School. He is the author of 150 scientific publications and has regularly testified on health and health care policy in the US Congress and state legislatures. His current research analyzes the costs and benefits of economic and regulatory approaches to prevent obesity\, increase physical activity\, and improve diets. Ongoing projects evaluate how patient reward programs change the use of preventive services and whether providing a 25% discount program on healthy food purchases (involving 800 participating supermarkets and 200\,000 families in South Africa) leads to a meaningful change in diets. \nFrom 1996 to 2003\, Dr. Sturm directed the economic and policy research program of the joint RAND/UCLA Research Center on Managed Care and was awarded the National Institute of Health Care Management’s Award for excellence in health services research in 2001. \nOutside work\, he is organizes music concerts in National Park sites\, co-organizes the Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Contest and Folk Festival\, Southern California’s oldest and longest running traditional music event\, and leads jam sessions at the California Traditional Music Society.
